QUEEN CHARLOTTE: A Bridgerton Story

Prepare to be transported back to the world of Regency-era England of Bridgerton.

Directed by Tom Verica, with original screenplay by Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy), this

spin-off miniseries shifts the spotlight to the alluring Queen Charlotte. It consists of two plot

lines: one in 1817 after the death of the royal heir, causing a succession crisis to secure the

lineage; and another set in 1761, with a young Charlotte marrying King George III, their

relationship and his mental illness.

The ensemble cast, led by the remarkable portrayal by India Amarteifio, shines with

undeniable presence. As the layers of her character unfold, I was completely captivated by

the intricate web of emotions that lie beneath her regal façade. Her power, intelligence, and

occasional moments of playfulness add a touch of brilliance to an already stellar

performance.

As Corey Mylchreest plays a young King George, it shows an undeniable chemistry

between him and Amarteifio. Also, the actor delivers a convincing performance in the face of

the psychological tribulations required by his role. It is impossible not to sympathize with his

mental suffering, and how it affected both the Kingdom and the relationship with his wife.

As before, the soundtrack is composed of reinterpretations of well-known pop songs,

translated to the ambience of the series. To honor the queen, songs by black women artists

were chosen. “That felt like Charlotte’s essence”, declares Alexandra Patsavas, music

supervisor and Rhimes’ longtime collaborator. Here, the audience is treated to orchestral

pop covers of Beyoncé and Alicia Keys hits. Also, the finale is a moving bittersweet note

with Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’, reinterpreted by Vitamin String Quartet.

In conclusion, my journey through the season has been an absolute triumph. While

staying true to the signature elements that made the previous seasons a success, Queen

Charlotte charts its own course. The emotional stakes are high, and the unexpected twists

kept me eagerly anticipating each new episode - great binge-watching material! The

charming performances, storytelling, and stunning visuals have solidified it as a must-watch

period drama. As an enthusiast of the show, I feel confident that newcomers will be truly

enchanted by the grandeur of Bridgerton. Long live the Queen!
